Art

Intent

We wish to enable the understanding and appreciation of art and craft from a variety of cultures, styles and periods of time.  The art curriculum should enable and inspire children to develop visual and tactile awareness. Children will learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas and artists. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. Our aim is for children to experience a broad and balanced art curriculum that is purposeful with clear intended outcomes for children to measure their own work against.

At Irby Primary School, we value Art and Design as part of a broad and rich curriculum.  We aim to encourage children to express their individual ideas, thoughts and interests and provide experiences that develop and extend their skills.  We also provide our children with the experience of visiting and displaying work from each year group in local art galleries.  This gives the children the chance to understand the impact their work can have within the local community.  We intend to inspire and challenge pupils, allowing them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Implementation

Children will be given the opportunity to enhance their skills using a range of media and textiles.  They are able to explore drawing, painting, printing, textiles, collage, 3D pieces and digital art.  Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.

After they have completed their artwork, children then have the opportunity to evaluate the finished work in order to allow them to be reflective and think about how they can make changes and keep improving.

The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each Art topic are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. This enables links to other curriculum areas, including humanities, with children developing a considerable knowledge of individual artists as well as individual works and art movements. A similar focus on skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture.

The school’s high quality Art curriculum is supported through the availability of a wide range of quality resources, which are used to support children’s confidence in the use of different media.

National curriculum:

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

·         produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

·         become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

·         evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

·         know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

 Impact

The aim of our art curriculum is to build a progression of skills through the school that is evident when viewing the celebration of the art on display.

Our children will have gained a knowledge of different styles of art and developed preferences that will influence their creative thinking in the future.

We also aim to have given the children skills that will make them evaluative and reflective learner who are engaged with their learning.
