PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education)

Irby Primary School
In Irby Primary School, PSHE Education is a vital and uniquely part of children’s education and their personal development.

PSHE Education is a subject that involves a planned, developmental programme of learning through which children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives both now and in the future. As part of a whole school approach, PSHE education equips pupils to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives through developing the qualities and attributes required to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. PSHE Education is instrumental in promoting Spiritual, Moral, social and Cultural (SMSC) Education, incorporating British Values and all aspects of learning are implicit in the school values and with meaningful cross-curricular opportunities to embed key knowledge and skills through all aspects of school life.

What does PSHE look like at Irby Primary?

Irby Primary School’s PSHE Education curriculum is based upon the Coram Life Education SCARF Programme of Study but it is also covered across many areas of the curriculum especially in our RE, Science and PE curriculums. Learning for children in Foundation Two to Year 6 takes place in formal timetabled weekly lessons and uses meaningful cross curricular links and activities threaded through all aspects of school life including: assemblies, themed days, all subject areas, our both our Character curriculum and Behaviour Curriculum.

We deliver timetabled learning sessions using the SCARF scheme of work, which meets the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education. In addition, we make informed decisions based on the needs of our children to include further subject knowledge that supports their personal development.

Throughout the school week, our pupils have many opportunities to work collaboratively in groups, take on roles of responsibility, and come together as a whole school community to celebrate achievements and reflect on our shared journey.

PSHE Education and the SCARF programme is split into three core themes of: Relationships, Health and Well-being and Living in the wider world. Within this structure, learning is organised under six over-arching themes: Me and my Relationships (including Relationships and Sex Education), Valuing difference, Keeping Myself Safe, Rights and Responsibilities, Being My Best and Growing and Changing. Half termly units of work link closely with the school ethos, safeguarding, Fundamental British values, children’s rights and responsibilities, staying safe so that the children have depth and breadth within this area of the curriculum.

Relationships and Sex Education

At Irby Primary, the Relationships and Sex curriculum for Y4-Y6 is delivered by expert educators from SCARF. Opportunities for parents and carers to view the resources will be offered prior to the sessions.

RHE are statutory at primary and parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from the subjects. As sex education is not statutory at primary level, other than what must be taught as part of the science curriculum, parents have the right to request to withdraw their child from all or part of the sex education curriculum. The headteacher will automatically grant a parent’s request to withdraw their child from sex education, other than the content that must be taught as part of the science curriculum
