PROMOTING EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE
INSPIRING PUPILS SUCCESSFULLY
To achieve this goal, we aim to ensure that every child can realise their potential, both personal and academic, through access to an broad, rich curriculum and engaging learning activities.
For this to happen, every child must strive for excellent attendance to ensure that they have the best access to the learning taking place.
Children should be in school to maximise their opportunities to learn, have fun, make friends, develop key attributes such as resilience or determination and to achieve.
ATTENDANCE LEGISLATION
Schools are required by law to take an accurate register of all of the children on roll, including those late or absent. This information must be submitted regularly to Wirral Education Authority and the Department for Education, who challenge schools with low attendance.
Attendance is an important part of Irby Primary’s safeguarding duty and responsibilities.
PUNCTUALITY
As identified in the table to the left, the impact of persistent lateness can be significant in lost learning time alone. However, the effects do not stop there as a child late to school may also:
experience increased anxiety at being late or falling behind
feel more self conscious or even embarrased at arriving late
struggle to settle into class as they have missed important introductions and/or explanation at the start of lessons.
find it difficult to catch up on lost learning as all of our learning is incremental and builds from the previous lesson.
HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME
Establish a good routine in the evenings and mornings before school so that your child is well prepared for the day ahead.
Arrange medical and dental appointments outside of school hours where possible to minimise disruption to learning.
Talk to your child about their school experience and take an interest in, and provide support with, their leaning including homework.
Take family holidays outside of term time.
Always inform school of the reasons for your child’s absence.
Be honest about and prepared to discuss any challenges or difficulties facing your family so that school can provide early and effective support.
FAMILY HOLIDAYS
You can demonstrate your commitment to your child’s education by not taking holidays during term time.
There are 170 days of school holidays, which are available for families to enjoy important time together whether here or abroad.
