Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Education
At Irby Primary school we strongly believe in ensuring that children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Education is highly valued and is interwoven through our curriculum and all of school life.
SMSC education an over-arching umbrella that encompasses all aspects of personal development. the four key areas, all of which overlap and reinforce one another, are taught discretely (e.g. learning about British democratic history through history lessons or about an understanding of right and wrong through our Behaviour Curriculum) and through many other areas of the curriculum through meaningful cross-curricular links.
The coverage map provided below identifies more specifically the objectives for each of the four themes and some of the areas of the curriculum where children learn about, revisit and then apply their understanding. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list but hopes to provide examples of when and how children learn through SMSC education.
Children’s understanding of SMSC is integral for each individual to achieve personall targets and key characteristics as well as to support academic progress and achievement.
