Curriculum Intent
The intent of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. We aim to give our children a lifelong love of languages. Lessons are lively, interactive and involve a variety of speaking and listening activities. In upper KS2 more reading and writing activities are introduced to reflect the skills of the students. Songs are sung, games played and everyone is encouraged to have a go. The aim is to give all students confidence. The cultural aspects of each language are also studied and the students find these fascinating especially in the ways that they differ from their own whilst adding to their global awareness.
Implementation
By the end of their language journey at Irby Primary School children will:
· speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
· listen to native speakers and recognise familiar expressions
· read, discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied from authentic materials including books
· be able to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
Impact
The impact of this is that our children move on to their various secondary schools with an enthusiasm for language learning, confidence in their ability to learn and adaptable skills for learning a language.
Chinese
Previously, In Foundation Two and Key Stage One the children learnt Chinese with Mrs Cui. Below are some links to the fun songs we loved to learn in case you would like to carry on practising them.
